Stop Trying to Go Viral: What Businesses Should Actually Aim For
Every few months a gym video blows up — a million views, a flood of comments, everyone in the industry sharing it in their group chats. It looks like the dream. But if you run a gym and you're chasing that same moment, you're probably optimising for the wrong thing. Viral views are exciting, but they rarely pay the bills. What actually grows a gym is a lot less glamorous: reach that touches the right people, relevance that makes them stop scrolling, and enough repeat exposure that when they're finally ready to join, your name is the one they remember.
Reach vs. Relevance
Reach is just a number — how many people saw your content. Relevance is whether those people were the ones who could ever realistically become members. A video that gets 500,000 views from people scattered across the world does very little for a gym that only serves one postcode. A video that gets 3,000 views, but 2,000 of those are local people who fit your ideal member profile, is worth far more. Before you judge a piece of content by its view count, ask who actually saw it. Local relevance beats global reach every time for a business like yours.
Brand Recognition Compounds Quietly
Nobody joins a gym after watching one video. What actually happens is slower and less visible: someone sees your gym in their feed, then sees it again a week later, then again after that. Each time, you become a little more familiar. By the time they're thinking "I should finally get back into training," your gym is the one that comes to mind, because it's the one they've seen the most. That's brand recognition doing its job. It doesn't show up as a spike in a dashboard, but it's the thing that's actually moving people toward a decision.
Engagement That Means Something
Likes and views are easy to inflate and easy to misread. The engagement worth paying attention to is the kind that signals real interest: someone saving a workout to try later, sending a video to a training partner, commenting with a question about your classes or your coaching. That's a person actively considering you, not just someone who was entertained for six seconds before swiping on. If you're reviewing content performance, look past the top-line numbers and check what kind of engagement you're actually getting.
Enquiries Are the Real Scoreboard
At the end of the day, content exists to bring people through your door — whether that's a DM, a form fill, or someone walking in and asking about membership. A viral video with zero enquiries has done nothing for your business except take up your time. A quiet, unremarkable video that consistently generates a handful of enquiries every time you post it is worth infinitely more. If you're not already tracking where your enquiries come from, that's the single most useful habit you can build this month.
Repeat Exposure Builds Trust
Trust isn't built in one video, it's built across many. Someone who's seen you show up consistently — sharing coaching tips, showing the inside of your gym, introducing your team — trusts you more than someone who saw one polished clip go viral once. Consistency is what turns a stranger into a warm lead, and a warm lead into a member.
None of this is as exciting as chasing a viral hit, but it's what actually works. Reach the right people, stay relevant to them, show up often enough to be remembered, and measure success by enquiries rather than views. That's a strategy you can repeat every single week — and one that keeps working long after any one video stops trending.
